Upon arrival, police said they found John Hemeleski, Jr., 46, standing at the corner of Broad Street and James Street with a gray shirt wrapped around his left hand that was still visibly bleeding badly.

According to the police, they tried to calm down Hemeleski in an attempt to render first aid. However, the man refused to be treated and became more and more agitated and irate toward the officers.

At one point, he took an aggressive fighting stance and charged the officers, who pushed him back and again tried to render first aid.

When Hemeleski placed one of his hands behind his back the officers took the opportunity to try and restrain him, as he was becoming a danger to himself and others, they said.

However, Hemeleski spit and swung his fists at the officers as they were restraining him. Eventually the police were able to subdue the man enough to place him in an ambulance.  He was transported to Clara Maass Medical Center for treatment.

Once at the hospital, Hemeleski continued to fight with staff and had to be restrained in a secure room in the ER.

Hemeleski was charged with aggravated assault on police officers, resisting arrest and throwing bodily fluids. Judge Paparazzo was contacted and released Hemeleski on his own recognizance, pending psychological evaluation at Clara Maass.  A court date was set for August 9.
