Area Under Flood Watch As Storm Hits Northern New Jersey

Officials warn of possible damaging winds, heavy rain.

 

A flood watch has been issued for parts of Essex and nearby counties, and more rainfall is possible through early Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

From Sunday afternoon through Monday morning, total rainfall could be between 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches or more, according to a Sunday night forecast. Significant flooding could occur in urban areas or those with poor drainage.

Heavy rain is expected to taper off to showers by Monday afternoon, the forecast said.

The state’s Office of Emergency Management was monitoring storm conditions Sunday, the agency said in a news release.

“We are closely monitoring the situation with our partners from the National Weather Service and the County Offices of Emergency Management,” said State Police Superintendent Colonel Rick Fuentes, who is also director of emergency management. “Be especially careful if you are on the road. We remind drivers not to drive through ponded or standing water.”

Public Service Electric and Gas to deal with the impacts from heavy rainfall and potentially damaging wind gusts through Monday morning.

The utility asked residents not to touch downed wires and report outages to 1-800-436-PSEG.

 

The forecast for Bloomfield, from the National Weather Service, is below: 

Overnight: Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. Low around 46. Breezy, with a east wind 22 to 25 mph decreasing to between 14 and 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday: A chance of showers before 2pm, then a slight chance of showers after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 58. South wind between 8 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Monday Night: A chance of showers, mainly after 9pm. Cloudy, with a low around 39. South wind between 13 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday: A chance of showers, mainly after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 59. Breezy, with a west wind between 16 and 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday Night: A slight chance of showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. West wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 60.
