Each concert will feature local performers playing and discussing a different kind of music in a family-friendly outdoor setting.
"The Adult School of Montclair prides itself on being an organization that brings the community together for learning experiences," said Susan Freedman, chairwoman of the Curriculum Committee, and a volunteer at ASM for more than 10 years. "This series offers the opportunity for learning as well as enjoyment in a beautiful setting."
All of the concerts run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Van Vleck House & Gardens, 21 Van Vleck St. A $10 donation for adults is suggested; children are free. Contact Suzy Kass at 973-746-6636 for more information.
Wednesday June 4 – The Bloomfield Youth Band
Composed of secondary school and college students, the Bloomfield Youth Band was founded by Patrick Burns, appropriately enough, at the age of 17. The concert will feature music by Sam R. Hazo, music arranger for Lucinda Williams. Burns, a professor of music at Montclair State University, will discuss the history of band music in the US, and how composers use instruments to highlight themes in music.
Thursday June 12 –Jazz House Kids – Jazz House in the Park
Montclair's own Jazz House Kids are ideal ambassadors of this exciting, propulsive, addictive American art form. The concert, hosted by Jazz House faculty under the direction of Ted Chubb, will showcase several award-winning student and adult ensembles, and special guest jazz artists. The program will include examples of jazz from the 1930's through today.
Monday June 16 – NJ Symphony Orchestra String Quartet – Mozart the Boy Wonder
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote symphonies, operas and chamber music before he learned to shave! This concert will highlight the early genius of Mozart, trace his development from child prodigy to master composer and demonstrate the ingenious techniques that define his musical style. There will be a variety of instruments available for audience members to try ahead of time.
Thursday June 26 – Adelante! – Latin Jazz Salsa
Adelante! is an award-winning, 8-piece band that combines traditional and contemporary Latin rhythms from the Caribbean and Africa with jazz arrangements and improvisation. The results are fresh and inspiring. Adelante! features David Oquendo, Mike Kaplan, Rob Henke, Ben Williams, Nicki Denner, Jennifer Vincent, Ricky Salas and Willie Martinez.
