Thursday Afternoon at the Movies: "Nothing But a Man"

This powerful film was shot at the height of the Civil Rights movement and was a favorite of Malcolm X.  It tells the story of an African-American railroad worker (Ivan Dixon) who falls in love with a schoolteacher (Abbey Lincoln).  The couple must struggle with racism, unemployment and social barriers in 1960s America. The Washington Post said, “Nothing But a Man is one of the most sensitive films about black life ever made in this country”

1964 – B&W – 95 minutes – NR
