John Henderson (Albert Brooks) is a twice-divorced author who decides the only way to fix his relationship problems is to move back to his childhood home and work things out with his Mother (Debbie Reynolds). Brooks and co-writer Monica Johnson won the New York Film Critics award and the National Society of Film Critics award for Best Screenplay. The role of the Mother was originally offered to Nancy Reagan who considered coming out of retirement but decided to stay home and take care of the ill ex-President then suffering from Alzheimer’s disease
