A Midsummer's Weekend with the Bard

Shakespeare opportunities for the weekend

“Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears ….”  While Hamlet is not one of the plays being performed locally this weekend, several other Shakespearean works will be in the vicinity. Love’s Labour’s Lost will be performed outdoors in the gardens of the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, while A Midsummer Night's Dream can be enjoyed in a traditional setting at the Greek amphitheater at the College of St. Elizabeth. The lesser known Timon of Athens will be revived in Madison at . These plays have been popular for more than 200 years, for “Pleasure and action make the hours seem short.” –Othello (Act II Scene III).

Where/When: Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, 45 Macculloch Ave., Morristown; Sunday at 4 p.m.

Why Go? The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s Next Stage Ensemble will perform Shakespeare’s delightful coming-of-age comedy in the Gardens of the Museum. The Ensemble upholds the Shakespearean tradition of a traveling company of actors bringing its theatrical repertory into the community, by performing at hospitals, retirement communities, libraries, camps, schools and community centers. Bring the entire family to enjoy this tradition.

Pricing: Adults $6; senior & students $5; members and children under 12 are free.

Why Go? Timon of Athens is one of Shakespeare’s lesser-produced plays, so do not miss the opportunity to experience it as adapted by resident director Brian Crowe. Imaginative staging and resonant themes make this 90-minute production a must-see.

Where/When: College of St. Elizabeth, 2 Convent Road, Morristown; Saturday and Sunday at 4:30 and 8:15 p.m.

Why Go? Experience Shakespeare outdoors at the Greek amphitheater at the College of St. Elizabeth. This newly conceived 90-minute production puts a fresh face on what is considered the world’s most popular comedy and will delight people of all ages. Directed by Cameron Watson.
