Your Weekend "Get Out" Guide

There's summer fun for everyone this weekend with movies, the NJ State Fair, art, live music and more.

Another summer weekend is here and the local plans don't disappoint. If the skies are clear you can enjoy the re-scheduled outdoor screening of Back to the Future or spend the day at the NJ State Fair Sussex County Farm and Horse Show.

If the weather does not comply, check out the new art exhibit at the Library, any number of live music events, family yoga, a flea market and more.  Whatever your mood, age, or family constellation, there's something below to fit it.

-- Back to the Future Outdoor Screening

Where/When: Church Street & Fullerton Ave., Montclair.  Friday, August 5 at 8:30pm (movie begins at 9pm)

Why Go: Rain, rain stay away!  Hopefully the skies will be clear this time for the “Montclairismo” movie night, courtesy of the Montclair International Film Festival.  Enjoy the shops and restaurants of lovely Church Street and then settle in lawn chairs for the 80’s classic family favorite, Back to the Future.

-- Anime Screening for Teens

Where/When: Sugee! 107 Watchung Ave., Montclair. Friday, August 5 from 7 pm. to 9 pm.

Why Go: Montclair’s fun, quirky and everything Japanese shop hosts a teen anime night with the screening of Gurren Lagann eps 1-4 (Rated PG-13)

Pricing: $5, refreshments included

 

-- NJ State Fair Sussex County Farm and Horse Show

Where/When: 37 Plains Road, Augusta, NJ 07822. Friday August 5 to August 14 10am to 10pm.

Why Go: An immense variety of activities, exhibits and attractions make up the annual NJ State Fair in Sussex County.  Just a few of the highlights include horse shows, a fiddlers' contest, 4H exhibits, an oxen pull, a chili cook off, carnival rides, live performances, a farmer's market and loads more.

Pricing: Kids 6-12 - $5.00 Adults - $11.00 Seniors (60+) $9.00. Evenings after 8:30 pm: Adult $9.00. Sunday, August 14th: Kids < 12 Free, Adults $7.00.  Children’s Day - Tuesday, August 9th
Children 6-12 years old - $4.00 (5 and under FREE)

 

--  Live Music at Bar Cara

Where/When: Bar Cara, 1099 Broad Street, Bloomfield.  Friday, August 5 from 9pm to 12AM.

Why Go:  Local, acoustic cover band Your Ex Boyfriends plays live; their repertoire of songs spans a variety of performers and bands like Weezer, Lady Gaga, Cat Stevens and a slew more. 

Pricing: No cover, $3 drafts at the Bar while YEB plays, 
first 10 people to mention the code "D L J" to the bartender get a beer on the band.

-- Live Jazz at Trumpets 

Where/When:  Trumpets, 6 Depot Square, Montclair.  Friday, August 5 and Saturday, August 6.

Why Go:  Trumpets ensures no weekend goes by without live jazz.  On Friday, NJ native and harmonica great Rob Paprozzi performs.  On Satuday, the Ted Brown Quartet plays two shows at 8pm and 9:30pm followed by vocalists Lula Valdivia and Cecilia Alessandra at 11pm. — Shows at Just Jakes

Where/When: Just Jakes, 30 Park Street, Montclair. Friday, August 5 and Saturday August 6 at 10:30pm.

Why Go: If you're looking for live music, drinks and dinner, Just Jake's offers it all. On Friday catch modern rock/pop/metal band A True Story. Saturday's band TBD.

Pricing: $7 Cover.  Beer specials: Friday $2.50 Coors Light & $3.50 Blue Moon, Saturday $2.50 Bud Light.

 

-- Kids "Learn to Ride" Class

Where/When: , 100 Chestnut St., Montclair.  (Faculty Parking lot on North Fullerton Ave) Saturday, August 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: Bike Walk Montclair is back with their popular learn to ride clinic. Kids will learn using the “balance first” method. Each student must wear a helmet and have a bicycle that they can rest his or her feet flat on the ground while sitting on the bicycle seat.

The class is recommended for children ages 5 and up.

Pricing: $25, refreshments provided.

 

—Kids Workshop at Home Depot 

Where/When: Home Depot, 60 Orange Street, Bloomfield, and 955 Bloomfield Ave., Clifton. Saturday, August 6 from 9 am to 12 pm.

Why Go: Kids ages 5 to 12 can have their own DIY fun at a Home Depot workshop. Participants will make a pencil box by learning do-it-yourself skills and tool safety. In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, and an achievement pin.

Pricing: Free.

 

-- The Playdate Artists: A New Exhibit at The MPL

Where/When: Montclair Public Library, 50 S. Fullerton Ave., Montclair.  Now through August 30 during regular library hours.

Why Go: The Montclair Public Library's latest art installment entitled the “Playdate Artists” features paintings from Donna Ellis, Robyn Burns, Joan Donnelly, and Lynne Palmer; a group of artist friends that collaborated for the exhibit.  Read more about it .

-- Open House Art Bar

Where/When: Jerry's Artist Outlet, 495 Prospect Ave, Essex Green Shopping Plaza, West Orange.  Saturday, August 6 from 1:00pm–4:00pm.

Why Go: Join Artist Jim Minot for a great afternoon of trying your hand at oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, brushes and papers with lots of education and entertainment.

-- Taste of Terroir: Rieslings from Around the World

Where/When: , 30 Church St, Montclair.  Saturday, August 6, from 4:00pm–6:00pm.

Why Go:  The savvy sommeliers at Amanti Vino are uncorking loads of Rieslings; with everything from “bone dry to sweet” everyone’s taste should be satisfied.

—Improv at Piano’s Bar and Grill

Where/When: , 36 Broad St., Bloomfield. Saturday, August 6 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Why Go: Improv group Nutty by Nature  provides the anything goes comedy for the evening.

-- Mia Yoga Family Yoga  

Where/When: Mia Yoga, 116 Greenwood Ave (corner of Walnut and Greenwood) Montclair.  Sunday, August 7 from 3:30 to 5pm.

Why Go:  Finish out your weekend with some fun, family stretch time.

Pricing: Free, donations accepted (give what you can) Mia Yoga is also accepting donations of blankets, canned food, toys etc. to be donated to an East orange soup kitchen.

 

-- Flea Market, Craft & Collectibles Show

Where/When: , 100 Passaic Ave, Belleville.  Sunday, August 7 from 9:00am–5:00pm.

Why Go: Over 100 exhibitors will be presenting their wares (and food!) at this fundraiser for the Belleville Athletic Advisory Council.

Pricing: Free admission

 

-- Glenmont Walking Tour: Edison’s Estate

Where/When: 12 Honeysuckle Ave, West Orange.  Sunday, August 7 from 2:30 to 3pm.

Why Go: Enjoy a guided walking tour of the beautiful grounds of The Glenmont Estate, the Edison family home from 1886 through 1947. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.  

Pricing: $7, Tickets can be obtained at the laboratory visitor center.

 

-- Live Music at InsaniTea

Where/When:  InsaniTea, 570 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair.  Sunday, August 7 from 1pm to 3pm.

Why Go: The Erica Seguine/ Shannon Baker Duo perform original music, including jazz, classical, and other genres.  Don’t forget to cool off with InsaniTea’s new ice cream floats.

Pricing: Free, tips for musicians appreciated.

 

-- Comedy Sundays at Tierney’s

Where/When: , 136-138 Valley Rd, Montclair, NJ.  Sunday August 7, from 8:00pm–10:00pm.

Why Go: Enjoy some of the area's best rising comedy stars along with special guests from major comedy clubs, casinos, TV and satellite radio.
