Daytrip for Downton Abbey Fans

Desperate for Downton Abbey? (Yes!) As fans prepare for Season 3 to reach American shores and television stations on January 6, here's a daytrip to put viewers in the mood.

The lush and lavishly-decorated Ballantine House at the Newark Museum was built in 1885. Jeannette and John Holme Ballantine built the home with 27 rooms, including eight bedrooms and three bathrooms.  Part of The Newark Museum since 1937, the house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985.

The period rooms are restored to 1891, representing  the "ideal home" in America over a century ago.  The first-floor rooms include the Billiard Room, the Parlor, the Reception Room, the Library and the Dining Room.  The Music Room offers an interactive experience called Make Yourself at Home.

Upstairs, three private family rooms have been restored to their Victorian look: the Master Bedroom, Mrs. Ballantine's Boudoir and Alice Ballantine's Bedroom.

The Ballantine House is decorated for the holidays, and set up as if the family is ready for a lavish tea and holiday ham.

Tips: If you drive, parking is available in the Museum lot ($7) or on the street at coin-operated meters. The museum lot fills up, so plan ahead.

If you take the train,you can either walk or take the light rail from Broad Street Station. Take the Washington Park stop.

Hungry? There are usually food trucks across from the museum (diagonally) at Washington Park. They take cash.

The Museum has a cafe, as well.
