Bloomfield Bombers 13-Under Baseball Team Wins 1 and Loses 2 in Memorial Day Tournament

The Bloomfield Bombers 13-Under Baseball Team managed by Dan McDowall went 1-2 in the Bergen County Charity Classic Memorial Day weekend tournament.

On Saturday, the Bombers beat the Tenafly Tigers, 18-15 and lost to the WWT Cardinals, 8-3. On Sunday, the Bombers lost to the Mahwah Thunderbirds, 9-7.

Dylan Piacenza started the first game Saturday on the mound.  After a scoreless first, Bombers started showing what they can do in the second inning.  To start it off, Kyle Tice delivered hit a base hit and stole second base.  Robert Reboa walked making it runners on first and second.

JJ Mendoza hit a single to drive in one run. Brandon Kelly was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.  Piacenza, Eddie Abplanalp and Craig Dittrich all walked bringing in Elliot Urgent, who reached on a force out, Mendoza and Kelly, making the Bombers lead 4-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Bombers let in one run but recovered by making an amazing double play.

To start the top of the third, Tice walked and then stole second and third.  Urgent walked, too. Then Manager McDowall gave the sign for both Tice and Urgent to steal. Tice scored to add another run.  Reboa was then hit by pitch. Mendoza hit another single to drive in Urgent. Kelly also hit a single to bring in Reboa.  Singles by Piacenza and Abplanalp brought in Mendoza.

With the bases loaded, Dittrich hit a double scoring Piacenza, Abplanalp and Kelly. Sean Demo then singled to bring in Dittrich.

The Bombers loaded the bases again and Reboa singled to bring in Demo.  Dittrich then singled and Kelly scored. The Bombers had a huge lead, 18-1, after this inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Bombers changed pitchers, bringing in Urgent and the Tigers got within 18-5.

After the Bombers went down, one, two, three in the top of the fourth, DiMatteo came in to pitch.  In that inning, the Bombers let up 4 runs and their lead was now 18-9. The Bombers allowed seven more runs in the top of the fifth, but they pulled through to win the game, 18-15.

In the second game Saturday, the Bombers did not get on the scoreboard against the WWT Cardinals until the fourth inning.

Abplanalp started on the mound. In the bottom of the first, the Bombers gave up one run. In the third inning, the Bomber gave up two more runs.

But in the fourth, Piacenza started off with a single down the third base line then stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Abplanalp hit a single bringing Piacenza home and making the score 3-1.

In the fourth and fifth innings, the Bombers gave up one run each time making the score, 5-1. In the sixth inning, the Bombers started to pull through.

Kelly walked, along with Liam Bejasa and Piacenza. With the bases loaded, Abplanalp walked to score Kelly. Dittrich hit an infield single to bring in Bejasa. The score was then 5-3.

But the Bombers gave up three more runs and so the final score was Cardinals 8, Bombers 3.

On Sunday the Bombers were the home team against the Mahwah Thunderbirds and on the mound was Manny Corporan. 

There were a couple of walks and a couple of ground ball hits and the Bombers were down, 2-0, early. But by the end of the third inning, the Bombers were losing, 7-0.

The Bombers were able to drive in one run in the fourth and the score was 7-1. In the fifth, the Bombers started to make their way back.

To start the inning, Mendoza singled and then Kelly walked.  Bejasa grounded out but advanced the runners.  Next, Jordan DiFabritis also hit a ground out that brought Mendoza in for a run. Piacenza hit a single to score Kelly.  Piacenza then stole second base and scored on a single by Abplanalp, bringing the score to 7-4. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Demo started off by hitting a single. Then DiMatteo reached on the third baseman’s error. On an errant pickoff attempt, Demo scored making it 7-5. In the top of the seventh, the Bombers gave up two more runs.

The Bombers tried to rally again in the bottom of the seventh . Mendoza singled to left and DiFabritis reached on the third baseman’s error. Piacenza walked and Abplanalp singled to drive in Mendoza. The Bombers, though, were not able to pull it out and lost, 9-7.

The Bombers will start their Cerbo League playoffs next weekend and are currently ranked first in their Saturday league. Their Sunday league schedule is not wrapped up yet.  You can follow the Bloomfield Bombers on Facebook under Bloomfield Bombers
