BAKER COLLEGE OF AUBURN HILLS ADDS TWO PROGRAMS IN HIGH-DEMAND FIELDS: Computer science, health sciences

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Baker College of Auburn Hills will offer two additional new programs beginning fall quarter: mobile applications software engineering bachelor’s degree and eldercare specialist associate degree.  Registration is open for classes that begin Monday, Sept. 30. These programs are in addition to the post-licensure Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) announced last week.

“Graduates of these two new programs will be qualified for some of the highest demand jobs in our area,” said Jeff Love, Baker College of Auburn Hills president.

The mobile applications software engineering bachelor of computer science program will prepare students to develop solutions for mobile devices across multiple platforms, including Android, Apple’s iOS and Microsoft Windows. Computer software engineers design and develop software by applying the theories and principles of computer science and mathematical analysis to create, test and evaluate the software applications and systems that make computers work.

All courses for this program will be available at the Auburn Hills campus and through Baker College Online, allowing students to create the schedule that best fits their needs.

Software developer jobs are forecasted to grow by 30 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Banking is one of the fastest growing segments in development of mobile applications.  A recent Juniper Research study estimates that more than a billion people will use mobile handsets to access financial services by the end of 2017.

The BLS estimates the average annual salary for software developers is $102,550 with the lower 10 percent earning $62,800 and the top 10 percent earning more than $148,850.

The eldercare specialist associate degree program teaches clinical skills in phlebotomy, the electrocardiogram (EKG) process and the Michigan Model of Education for Certified Nurse Aide. Specialized courses in the care of chronically ill and geriatric populations prepare students for positions in hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities and home-health agencies.

After successful completion of the coursework, students are eligible to take the Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation to earn the credential of CNA (certified nurse aide).

This is another high-demand career. Employment of nursing aides, orderlies and attendants is expected to grow by 20 percent between 2010 to 2020.

The BLS estimates the average annual salary for nursing assistants is $25,620 with the lower 10 percent earning $18,300 and the top 10 percent earning more than $35,330.
