Booker, Christie Ham It Up for Video

Mayor and governor have fun with their images

Just because they're the state's two most prominent politicians doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor. The office of Gov. Chris Christie yesterday released a lighthearted video co-starring Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a peripatetic go-to guy, riffing off his now national-scale image as a man of action following his rescue of a neighbor from a burning building several weeks ago. As the Democratic mayor of the state's largest city is depicted doing everything from coming up with a spare guitar for Bruce Springsteen to catching a falling baby, a faux-frustrated Christie hisses "Booker!" The video was produced for the New Jersey Press Association's Legislative Correspondent's Club show. Click on the video above to see the Cory and Chris…

misericordia, Cory Booker went to Yale, Oxford and Stanford. Not that any of those institutions are bad places to have been, but I don't understand why Harvard would be a problem either. Do people in those sorts of places have limp wrists?   more ›

Bloomfield May Soon Be A TV Star

Viewpoint, an educational TV show to be broadcasted nationally, may soon feature Bloomfield as "a town on the rebound."

Bloomfield may soon be the subject of a network TV show about a “town on the rebound,” said Township Administrator Yoshi Manale at Monday night’s township council meeting. “It’s called Viewpoints,” said Manale, explaining that it would be a five-minute feature airing on network channels and “hosted by football great Terry Bradshaw.” “It would be aired on the Discovery channel and Headline News,” he added.  “The cost to the township is for production rights to the [segment] and would be $21,000.” Manale said he thought the arrangement would benefit the township because “we could use it for promotional reasons in the future. Plus it’s a feel-good piece.”  He said the production would highlight "the positive aspects of Bloomfield, the …

Township Purchases Wetland Property for Environmental Center

The Lion Gate property, formerly owned by developer John DeSimone, will be preserved by the township in its natural state

Bloomfield Township will soon have a new Environmental Center, says Mayor Raymond McCarthy. On Wednesday, May 9, the township officially purchased over five and half acres of wetland property on Lion Gate Drive for the sum of $2.2 million. “It’s nearly six acres of land that we got for the townspeople, without using a single penny of the taxpayer’s money,” he said.  A Green Acres grant was used to purchase the majority of the property, with the remainder paid for with a $250,000 grant from the NY/NJ Baykeeper, a wildlife conservancy organization. “We’re ecstatic that this has come to pass.  It gives the community more open space and natural area,” McCarthy said, noting that the parcel of land had once been earmarked for a complex of 38 …

POLL: Did Obama Do the Right Thing by Supporting Gay Marriage?

President Barack Obama made big headlines with his announcement this week.

President Barack Obama made national headlines this week when he came out in support of gay marriage during an interview on ABC News. Obama said he has changed his stance on the issue and said, for him, personally, "I think same-sex couples should be able to get married." Reporters at ABC called the statement historical. Obama's remarks came just after North Carolina formally banned gay marriage. Some critics have said the president may have come out for gay marriage for politcal reasons, in anticipation of the upcoming presidential election, but others say his sentiments are sincere. Was it appropriate for President Obama to stand up in support of gay marriage? What do you think?

New Jersey Arts Education Census Project surveys nearly all schools to compare arts education offerings.

A statewide survey of arts education programs in New Jersey, due schools to be released Thursday, finds a correlation between schools with more arts education programs and greater proficiency scores on the language sections of the state's High School Proficiency Assessment.   The report is a follow-up to one conducted in 2007, and is a joint project of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the state Department of Education, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation, and Quadrant Arts Education Research.
