Christie: Weight Loss Surgery 'Intensely Personal Issue'

Governor chides reporters for obsessing about 'silly,' 'shallow' subject, says he is not a role model

Gov. Chris Christie reluctantly fielded reporters’ questions Tuesday about his February Lap-Band surgery, but said he would not be providing the public with any news as he heads towards his weight-loss goal, which he pointedly refused to disclose. "This is it. You ask me any more questions about this, I’m not answering,” Christie said during a groundbreaking ceremony at a Newark vocational high school. "I’m not going to be giving you all updates as this goes along. ... I’m not giving people a day-by-day, week-by-week, blow by blow," he said, adding, "I don’t care to be a role model for anyone. This is an intensely personal issue." The governor told the New York Post Monday night he’d had Lap-Band surgery in February because of concerns …

Christie Underwent Weight Loss Surgery In February

Governor tells New York Post that Lap-Band procedure was done at the urging of his family. An NYU doctor made house calls to Christie's Mendham home to not draw attention to the surgery.

Gov. Chris Christie underwent stomach-shrinking Lap-Band surgery in February, he confirmed to the New York Post on Monday night while refuting speculation that he was slimming down for a White House run in 2016. Christie quietly had the Lap-Band — or laparoscopic adjustable gastric binding —procedure done in a New York hospital, telling the paper that he agreed to the surgery at the urging of his family after turning 50 in September. Sean Conner, a spokesperson for Christie, confirmed the story to Patch Tuesday. The governor insisted that the Lap-Band was not inserted to help him lose weight in the run-up to 2016. "I know it sounds crazy to say that running for president is minor, but in the grand scheme of things, it was looking at Mary …

'Jersey Proud' Ad Highlights Christie Re-election Campaign

The $1.2 million ad buy shows road to New Jerseyans' optimism in their state.

In Gov. Chris Christie's first television ad of his 2013 re-election campaign, the governor's leadership style is credited for renewing New Jersey residents' pride in their state after years of overtaxation and too much government spending. "Jersey Proud" shows how bipartisan reforms have helped "to strengthen New Jersey's future," according to the Christie campaign.

4 Percent of Essex County Bridges Deemed Structurally Deficient

Report says cost to repair all 908 spans would exceed $874 million.

Essex County’s aging bridges are in need of repair, but the cost to do the work would exceed $874 million, a new report released Monday shows.  Of the county’s 908 bridges, about 4 percent have been rated structurally deficient, according to a report on the issue-driven website NJ Spotlight.   Additionally, 1-in-5, or 20 percent of the bridges are considered to be functionally obsolete and not in line with current lane and shoulder standards, or occasionally flood, according to National Bridge Inventory data. The average age of an Essex County bridge is 50 years old. About one in four bridges in the state are either in poor condition or unable to handle current traffic loads, the data shows. Each bridge was rated based on structure, …

Christie, Codey Blame Each Other for Deadlocked Judicial Appointments

State senator, governor fuel old feud over judicial appointments.

Governor Chris Christie told the Essex County Bar Association Wednesday morning state Sen. Richard Codey, D-Essex, is the reason judicial appointments in the state are deadlocked, according to a published report. The governor said because of Codey 12 to 15 judges will not be appointed during a breakfast at McLoone's Boathouse in West Orange, according to an NJ.com report. Codey later disputed the allegations saying three years ago Christie made a deal with Essex County but has not honored it, the report said.  “He had his crew block appointments, so once again he has no respect for the truth,” the state sentor told the website.

Air Travelers Experience Wave of Sequester Flight Delays

Official: Flights leaving Newark Liberty heading south were re-routed back to Newark because the Washington area traffic control system was overwhelmed.

Air travelers in the U.S. Monday morning were greeted by growing delays throughout the East Coast because of mandated federal budget cuts brought on by the sequester, according to a published report. Flights out of New York and Washington were delayed by more than two hours, an Associated Press report posted by NJ.com said, as the Federal Aviation Administration kept planes on the ground. Air traffic controller furloughs were responsible for the delays, officials said, because there weren’t enough people to monitor busy air corridors. In one example the report cited, the 8 a.m. US Airways shuttle left the gate at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. six minutes early, but didn’t take off until 9:58 a.m. The plane landed at 10:48 a.m…

Everyday one comes out! While the country continues to feel the sting of the budget cuts known as sequestration, the federal government continues to shell out millions of taxpayer dollars on something that yields absolutely no benefit -- non-existent bank accounts. This year, the federal government will spend $890,000 on service fees for bank funds that have $0 balances. In 2012, taxpayers were …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Bloomfield Should Pass Companion Animal Protection Act

Resident urges anti-shelter killing legislation and expresses about new rules over recording ordinance.

Mayor McCarthy, Members of the Town Council and Ted Ehrenburg, Thank you all for working to bring positive resolution to the animal shelter management controversy. As mentioned previously, I am an unbiased town resident who cares about our town, the animals and our reputation, and I come with over 10 years of professional animal welfare experience on a national and local level. I have no personal interest in which group runs the shelter, and I was not involved with the animal shelter as a volunteer. I apologize that I have been unable to attend council meetings recently, but I wanted to reach out again to offer my unending support to help with the animal sheltering plans for our town and the towns we serve.   I would like to recommend for …

Now all you have is a string of meaningless comments that have nothing to do with the wonderful letter written by Ms. Cruz.
