I wish I could be there for Mr. Waldman's final concert. My own son had wanted to attend to see why I loved playing in the orchestra all those years ago. I'm so sorry that I have a commitment and I'll miss the concert. My best wishes always and my eternal gratitude for being such a wonderful teacher and bringing out the musician in me that I never knew existed.   more ›

Balloon Festival: Patch Will Send You Into the Sky

Event celebrates its 30th season.

When is a balloon festival not (just) a balloon festival? That’s a tough question, especially when a huge yearly event is billed as such (I mean, it's called the Festival of Ballooning, after all) and there certainly are plenty of hot-air balloons to be displayed. Still, the Quick Chek Festival of Ballooning—in its 30th year, running from July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington—is also part amusement park, with a healthy number of rides, an arts-and-crafts emporium, a yoga and Zumba demonstration, and lots and lots of food. Of the 30 years, Quick Chek has been a major sponsor for 20. And for the first time, Patch is partnering with the festival to get you in at a great price. Between May 13 and 20, use this link to buy tickets …

If you want a FREE close up time with the ballon, or a ballon, go to the 6:00 AM launch, but don't go into the festival. Then pick a special ballon and chase it. It will land someplace that is close to a road. The balloon people are more than happy to have you there.   more ›

Montclair Mom Set Loose At Bruce Concert

Amy Chiarello Barnett writes about one of the top 10 greatest nights of her life

I have always loved the music of “The Boss” although I cannot take credit for being one of “those” fans. The die hards who know every album, can argue song lyrics and set lists and tour dates and such. But I am a born and bred Jersey girl, and when our most famous native plays his premier gig in the largest city in the state, (not to mention in our own Essex County backyard) ... well, attention must be paid. On Wednesday night, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band played for the first time at the Prudential Center in Newark. And I was there. My invitation to last night’s show came via my well-connected friend Kathy. Her late night text message asking “What are you doing tomorrow night?” set into motion one of the Top Ten All Time …

Montclair Film Festival Opens: "The Latest Extravaganza In This Overachieving Town!"

Actor Oliver Platt asks ... "Tribeca what?"

Film festivals conjure up images of glitz, celebrities, red carpets, and amazing organization. The Venice and Tribeca film festivals come to mind. Although Montclair is not Cannes, the Montclair Film Festival got off to a glamorous and extremely successful start on Tuesday night at Montclair State University's Alexander Kasser Theater. Robert Feinberg, the film festival's founder and chairman, said he hesitated to make The Oranges the opening film of the festival as it's mostly about, well, adultery. But, in the end, he said he couldn't resist. "It's hard to find such a great film set in suburban New Jersey with such an incredible ensemble cast," he said. And he couldn't have picked a better film to launch a festival that's been two …

Sweet Charity: A Show with a Heart of Gold

Playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bloomfield College's Westminster Arts Center.

"Why do you believe in love?" "I don't know, you gotta have some religion." "Is that your religion?" "Well . . . I go to church an awful lot." So says Charity Hope Valentine, the lovelorn title character in Sweet Charity, Montclair Operetta Club’s spring musical about a spunky waif who tumbles in and out of love -- with often disastrous results. Sweet Charity, a universal tale of hope, love and dreams, is playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bloomfield College's Westminster Arts Center.  Don't miss it. The show tells the tale of a sweet and innocent young woman who works as a "dancer for hire" at the seedy Fandango dance hall and can't help attracting one scoundrel after another.  Charity’s predicaments create situations that are both …
