Students Create Sustainable Garden

Green Hearts kicks off Earth Day a little early at Bloomfield College

Bloomfield College’s environmental group, the Green Hearts Movement, is troweling around in the soil in a plot on campus to create a sustainable and edible garden just in time for Earth Day on April 22. The 10x40 foot garden will hold herbs, vegetables, flowers, and a water gutter to trap the rain and dew to keep the garden moist.

While it is in its early stages, the future plans are to have a bench to enjoy the flowing plants, a table to snack among the foliage, and lattice work to hold up those plants such as cucumbers and peas. A composter will be installed to recycle waste for rich topsoil. This project, being run entirely by the students, is a collective for the students to plant, cultivate and harvest crops that can be used by the college in the dining hall and donated to local food pantries.

The Green Hearts Movement offers information about how sustainable gardening works to support the environment.

“This is a project a long time in the planning,” says Bloomfield resident and college senior Michael Palmieri, co-founder of the Green Hearts Movement. “Our purpose is to show what can be done in a small space and teach others why a vegetable garden is important to the environment.”
