Presidents Day Weekend: What Will You Do With The Kids?

Here are a few ideas both in and outside Montclair—and feel free to add your own ideas

Montclair Public Schools are closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week. So what will you do with the kids? Here are a few ideas to help you answer that question. If you know of any others, please comment or email Shelley@patch.com.

Stay local:

Montclair Historical Society

Date/Time: Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Location: The Israel Crane House

Description: Play parlor games that George Washington might have played. Make a powdered wig like John Adams might have worn. Try your hand at signing your name using a quill pen and ink like Thomas Jefferson would have done. Churn butter the way Dolly Madison made it, and more. Admission is $10/child, includes the cost of all supplies and materials. Call 973-744-1796 to reserve a place by Thursday, February 16 or send a note to mail@montclairhistorical.org.

—Sports Domain Academy's camps

Date: Feb. 20 to Feb. 22

Location: Depot Square

Description: Peanuts Camp for 3 to 4 year olds; Kickers Camp for 5 to 8 year olds; and Pro-Training Camp for 9 to 12 year olds. For more information contact SDA at camps@sports-domain.com or call 973-746-6887.

Montclair Public Library

Date: The library is closed on Monday, Feb. 20 but offers a wide variety of events the rest of the week including a mother-daughter book club on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. For more information go here.

Doin' Dishes on Church Street is always a good idea. Make holiday gifts for teachers and grandparents. Check out their facebook page here.

—As always, the Geyer Family YMCA is offering programs for kids ages 3 on up. Check it out here.

If all else fails, see a movie! "The Secret World of Arrietty (Kari-gurashi no Arietti)," rated G, is playing at the Bellevue Cinema in Upper Montclair at 12:30 p.m., 2:50 p.m., and 5:10 p.m. on Feb. 20, 21, and 22. Also playing is Chronicle and Star Wars. For more information and times go here.

Get out of town for a night (or four):

1. Great Wolf Lodge is a waterpark heaven in the Poconos (or not depending on your age and point of view). Check it out here.

2. Rocking Horse Ranch in Highland, New York is a family resort with horseback riding, waterpark, and plenty of indoor and outdoor fun. Check it out here.

3. Get away for an afternoon... go climbing on Route 46 at the New Jersey Rock Gym. See here. Play minigolf in the dark. See here. Get smart at the Liberty Science Center. See here.

4. Take the bus into Manhattan and spend the day or a few days in the Big Apple. The Discovery Center at Times Square—just a short walk from the Port Authority—has various exhibits on right now including Dead Sea Scrolls and CSI: The Experience.

5. Sticking with New York City, take the kids bowling at Bowlmor Lanes in Times Square. It's pricey, but the atmosphere is great.

6. Also, the Intrepid Museum, Pier 86, West 46th Street and 12th Avenue in New York City is hosting a special week for kids from Feb. 18 to Feb. 26. Go here for a schedule of events. The cost is $22 for adults and $17 for kids aged 3 to 17 with kids under 3 free.

We hope we've given you some ideas, and that no matter what you do, you enjoy the long weekend! Please feel free to add your own ideas in the comments section below. Or email Shelley@patch.com.
