Sights and sounds from the 2012 Portuguese Parade in Newark.

Hundreds of residents poured onto Newark's Ferry Street Sunday for the annual Portuguese Parade, capping the three-day festival honoring the country.

The cultural blowout, which stretched along all of Ferry Street in the city's Ironbound and ended at Peter Francisco Park, featured traditional dancing and folks in Old World garb, appearances by community organizations and politicians like U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), state Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz (D-29), Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura and Newark city councilmembers, including East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador, whose office co-sponsored this year's festival with União de Clubes Luso-Americanos de NJ (UCLANJ). Jack Casimiro, owner of Power Concrete Co. in Newark, served as grand marshal.

Paying homage to one of Newark's largest populations, this year's Portugal Day Festival returned to being a celebration of culture and community and not the alcohol-soaked block party for which it was infamous.

"The Brick City is not the same without the presence of the Portuguese community," said Fernando Grilo, president of (UCLANJ), during grandstand ceremonies prior to the parade.

It's parade season in Newark, with the city having hosted the Firemen's Fair and Muster Festival last weekend and the African-American Heritage Parade two weekends ago.
