Mom's the Star This Sunday - Here's How to Celebrate

No matter what you do for Mom, this Mother's Day is perfect day to spend time together

It’s Mother’s Day, and if Mom’s still here – well, more on that in a moment.

For one of the most special days of the year, how about some cute, nice things to do with your special Mom?

▪ Flowers

I’m going with a Bloomfield legend here and, yes, you can pick up some flowers for Mom at the Brookside Garden Center, but why not make a nice day of it and have her select some herself? Located on the corner of Broad and Bay Streets, Brookside Garden Center is run by the O’Boyle family, and it carries a huge variety of seasonal plants and flowers.

Here's another idea. How about a nice walk in Brookdale, Brookside, or another of our township's lovely parks? The best thing? Your beautiful Mom amongst the gorgeous flowers and beautiful springtime growth and nature. A great time for photos that she (and you) will cherish.

▪ Dining Out

A great thing to do on Mother’s Day. Executive Chef Ryan Depersio and Bar Cara are offering both regular menu items and specials this Sunday. Depersio also praises his Mom, and pastry chef, Cynthia. “I wouldn't be doing this amazing job if it wasn't for my mom! She has directed me into doing what I love and I can’t thank her enough! So she really deserves all the love I receive for my cooking!”

Bella Napoli, a traditional favorite in town, is offering a Mother’s Day brunch with seatings at 12, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 pm. The special menu consists of a choice of six appetizers, second course of salad, and a variety of entrees. A special children’s menu is available as well.

▪ Coffee

While there are a number of Starbuck’s and Dunkin’ Donuts nearby, why not support a small business coffee shop? Chalet Coffee Shop at 373 Broad Street has been around quite a while. It’s tiny, and the perfect spot to take Mom for an early bite to eat, sip and discussion, especially about what makes her so special. If not here, recommended is the State Street Grill or, the old favorite, Nevada Diner.

▪ Shopping

If your Mom loves to shop, here’s a nice idea perhaps in addition to flowers and dining. Bloomfield Center is the destination, and Annie Sez is the spot for designer clothes, shoes and accessories at great prices. For the latest in trends, jewelry and handbags and purses, Mandee is another must-visit.

In closing, I’ll say this. Flowers and dinners are nice – they really are – but what your Mom really wants is time with you. And this is coming from someone whose Mom passed away in 2007.

I can’t pick up a phone and call my Mom, or dine with her on Mother's Day and give her a card. But if your Mom is still here, make some time, and make it a wonderful day for her.

Forget the garden center- they are legends in their own minds only but are now known for their proposed behemoth cell tower that will loom over all of their neighbors and drive their property values down.

Lots of problems with a cell tower on the garden center property
•the unknown long-term health risks of having a cellular tower so close to our homes and our elementary school
•the inevitable loss of home values due to the unsightliness of this overwhelming structure
•the interruption to our daily lives due to the construction and maintenance of the cell tower
•the questionable benefit of this cellular tower for our town – where most people seem to be content with their current T-Mobile coverage
•the questionable actual and measurable improvement in cell phone coverage
•the likelihood of more cellular towers from other carriers being built in Bloomfield once a precedent is set if this tower is allowed to be constructed
and iof course there is then the safety of this tower being built on on of Bloomfield's busiest intersections with 2 gas stations accrioss the way
