Does the Republican Party Need More Leaders Like Christie?

A column posted on 'The Daily Beast' touts officials like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as the solution to the GOP's problems.

Does the Republican Party need more leaders like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie?

It does, according to an column posted on The DailyBeast.com Wednesday.

Columnist John Avlon wrote in the article that Christie is the example other Republicans should be looking to amidst the GOP's "existential crisis."

"The 2012 ass-kicking is forcing Republicans to confront their deepest demons—namely, that they cannot simply write off whole regions of the country and remain a viable national party," Avlon wrote. "They cannot afford to alienate the fastest-growing communities of color in the USA. They cannot win a war against modernity."

Avlon noted that Christie has maintained largely favorable ratings from voters in a state that went to President Barack Obama in the last election. Christie's popularity comes from his willingness to abandon the "conservative playbook" when "ideology conflicts with reality," fiscal responsibility and education reform, Avlon wrote.

Hell No! We here in New Jersey think he is a loud mouth, do nothing, get his face on the news, insulting slob. If Christie is the role model of the" Republican Party" then no wonder it is failing. Don't believe his press releases.......he has done nothing but shoot off his big mouth. We hope that a good candidate will run against him so that we will be rid of him. Next time you do a poll ask the real people not just his small circle of friends.

Governor Christie is a role model for all politicians of the 21st century. He has taken to task the do nothing politicians on both sides of the aisle and shown how to get things going and that government needs to be held accountable. Hooray!!! for Gov Christie!!!

Carol's description of Governor Christie as a "loud mouth ... insulting slob" stoops to the level that she accuses him of occupying. In this regard, politics needs to be less personal. On the national level, for 8 years Republicans went after Bill Clinton (and Hillary), often very personally. Then for 8 years, Democrats went after George W. Bush. And for the past 4 years, Republicans have gone after President Obama (i.e., where's the birth certificate? Are you kidding me?). This serves no common good.

Secondly, BOTH parties need better leaders. Can anyone honestly say that Harry Reid is a good leader? Or Mitch McConnell? It wasn't that long ago that both parties had passionate, but bipartisan, leaders: George Mitchell, Alan Simpson, William Cohen, Scoop Jackson.

Time will tell whether Governor Christie can appeal, nationally, both to his party's base, as well as to all-important "center, independent" voters. The likes of Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin (remember her?) certainly do not.

Absolutely. New Jersey loves him and is lunky to have a national stature leader at a time when both parties are woefully short of good leadership at the top. You will find his detractors even in New Jersey but these represent a minority who are unable to rise above personal prejudices borne of old style politics. Anyone who looks at the issues for their own merits and backs public officials for their stance on the individual issues as well as their way of approaching the problems facing us today, will see that Christie is not bound by party politics. He is not afraid to stand his ground, unswayed by adverse publicity.

The current health of the state budget is a testimony to our governor's abilities. What did Corzine or McGreevey or Florio do? NUH-THING! This state has been a fiscal joke forever, and cleaning it up doesn't happen overnight nor is it easy to do in just a couple of years. So using derogatory remarks about Christie's style (or especially his weight) to justify one's personal political party affiliation is nonsense. And to suggest that the democrats in Trenton are responsible for the progress with the state government is like saying that the republicans are responsible for Obama's success in Washington. I love a leader who speaks his mind (intelligently), walks the talk, and doesn't take crap from anyone. And while Christie doesn't exactly "walk softly" he does "carry a big stick" and that's what's needed in NJ where our spreadsheet/finances have been a mess for years.

Well said J -- Chris Christie has uncovered all kinds of fraud & waste on his watch. He has gone through the budget with a fine tooth comb & found agencies that haven't met in a decade, yet all the members are receiving 100K plus salaries still! You mean to tell me we don't need more of that?

He is a no-nonsense, cross the aisle, I say what I mean type of guy; a RARITY in politics and I say we definitely need more of him. I don't get the conservatives who don't like him. As William F Buckley said, "nominate the most conservative candidate who can WIN" I, for one, think Chris Christie can win in '16 (although I would hate to lose him in NJ!)
