Police are searching for a man who tried to rob a Provident Bank Friday on the south side of Bloomfield.

The man entered the Provident Bank, at 100 Bloomfield Ave., just before 4:45 p.m. Friday and handed the teller a handwritten note requesting $3,000 to $4,000, according to Sgt. Anthony Servedio, Bloomfield Police Department spokesperson. The note also instructed the teller not to press the alarm and to return the note.

The man did not appear to be armed and did not threaten to use a weapon during the robbery attempt, said Servedio.

The teller, who was not identified by police, didn't return the note and also didn't turn over money to the man, who then calmly exited the bank. By the time police arrived, he had fled and was last seen walking east on Bloomfield Avenue and turning south onto N. 17th Street. 

The note was taken by police for examination.

He was described as a black man in his 20s, approximately 6 ft. tall with a thin build and moustache or goatee, wearing sunglasses, a black hooded sweatshirt, baseball cap and black athletic pants with yellow and red stripes on the both legs.
