Affordable Housing Proposal Inches Further

The Bloomfield Township Council unanimously approve a pilot program for Heritage Village, a proposed 82-unit affordable housing complex to be built on a municipal parking lot. The next step would be Planning Board approval.

In an unanimous vote with all seven members approving, the Bloomfield Township Council approved creating a pilot program Monday night for a proposed affordable housing complex for senior citizens and people with disabilities.

Heritage Village at Bloomfield Urban Renewal LLC. is a project that could transform the township municipal parking lot next to the post office into an 82-unit apartment complex.

Community Investment Strategies Inc., of Lawrenceville is already runs about 3,000 affordable housing units throughout the state and wants to build the complex.

Christiana Foglio, the company president, said last month the company hopes to fund the $15 million project by applying to the New Jersey Housing & Mortgage Finance Agency for the federal government’s 9 percent affordable housing tax credit program.

The township council approved a resolution to enter in a redevelopment agreement with Heritage Village to build affordable housing on the parking lot property. Township officials also approved a tax exemption and bulk variance for the project.

Glenn Domenick, director of the township’s Department of Community Development and Inspections, said the next step would be for Community Investment Strategies Inc. to get approval from the township's planning board. The company would also file an application with state officials for the affordable housing tax credit program. No one from the company was present at the municipal meeting.

Again, no information on where are we to park when this parking lot will be taken over. Did anyone asked or answer that question during the yesterday's presentation? I remember seeing this parking lot full last night. Where are we to park now? Is there an alternate parking in works? Shame on those politicians selling us out. Don't they have enough vacant, run down properties around the center to redevelop? Only someone who is self destructive or thinking of his personal gain would recommend this.
